Prevention

Prevention starts with all of us.

Prevention is about more than warning young people about drugs or alcohol. It starts in the relationships, skills, expectations, and environments that shape their everyday lives.

At CVARR, we bring people together to strengthen those foundations. Through youth leadership, education, and community partnerships, we work to prevent substance misuse and create a healthier Central Virginia.

How We Support Prevention

Supporting Youth Leadership

Young people have an important role in shaping a healthier community. Through HYPE Club and other youth engagement opportunities, CVARR helps students build leadership skills, share their perspectives, and turn their ideas into action.

Providing Education and Resources

CVARR works with schools and community partners to provide substance use prevention education. Through school programs, presentations, awareness campaigns, and practical resources, we help young people and adults build knowledge and skills to make informed decisions.

Bringing Our Community Together

Prevention takes all of us. CVARR connects families, schools, youth-serving organizations, healthcare providers, and other community partners to share ideas, identify needs, and take action together.

Creating Healthier Environments

The places where young people live, learn, and spend time influence their choices. CVARR works with partners to address youth access to substances, raise awareness about emerging retail products, and explore community strategies that support youth health and safety.

Local Information. Local Action.

Our prevention priorities are guided by youth survey findings, community feedback, and the experiences of our partners. This information helps us understand what young people are facing, build on what is working, and focus our efforts where they are needed most.

Be Part of Prevention

You don’t have to be a prevention professional to make a difference. Whether you are a parent, educator, student, business owner, or community member, you have something to contribute.

Connect with CVARR to:

  • Participate in prevention discussions and workgroups.

  • Learn about youth leadership opportunities.

  • Request prevention education or resources.
